Steve Quarles is a Wood Durability Advisor with the University of California, and a Technical Specialist for CAL FIRE with the State of California.  With expertise in the area of physical properties and performance of wood and wood-based products in-service, performance of structures, especially with regard to wildfire and moisture exposures, he is busy lecturing all around the state.  This class will:

 - Review how buildings are exposed and ignited by wildfire.

- Provide you with working knowledge of the Wildland Urban Interface Building Standard (WUIBS), Chapter 7A of the California Building Code.

- Help you understand what can be done to existing homes to improve their change of surviving a wildfire.

- Provide you with information about performance-based standards that are applicable to materials performance.

PaRR Inspections (Partnership for Response and Recovery) is the primary contractor that the Federal Emergency Management Agency tasked with providing Disaster Housing Inspectors in time of need. This 8-hour course will earn you the home inspectionCertification of Disaster Housing Inspector, making you eligible to work disaster inspections when called.  In addition to being able to add this certification to your credentials, you will be prepared if a disaster strikes close to your area.

PLEASE NOTE: The advanced class is being put on before the beginning because you cannot take both of these back to back. Instead, you can take the beginning on Monday and then wait for the next conference to take the advanced class.

Wes Evans is the lead instructor and runs the HVAC/R program at the Truckee Meadows Community College Technical Facility, which is located in Reno/Sparks.

He has an AAS degree in HVAC/R and prior to becoming a college level instructor, Wes was employed by Hussman.

He is well known in the local area and enjoys teaching his trade and profession that he enjoys so much.

home inspectionThis class on inspecting HVAC equipment will cover the external component needed to operate safely.  The venting of different types of furnaces will be covered, 80% and 90% will be focused on.  Also the codes of the furnace will be discussed pertaining to location and installed.  The Air-Conditioning (condensing unit) will also be discussed in the same manner however looking at

electrical, line-sets, and installation.

home inspectionByron Duerksen is a Master Inspector and former partner in a Plumbing & HVAC company and later owned a water treatment business. He is a certified installer and trainer of both Wirsbo Pex and Gastite flexible plumbing products, items becoming more common in construction. He is currently installing an ozone water purification unit and a tank-less water heater for a friend, and is taking pictures, which he will share with the class, covering installation techniques and answering questions about each. The use of UV for disinfection will also be covered. He will demonstrate the proper installation of Wirsbo Pex Tubing with samples of the components and installation tools. In the last couple of years many new methods of connecting copper plumbing have entered the market place. Byron will bring these components and show their usage.
